In Shakespeare's play “Romeo and Juliet” - set in Verona in 1302 - the lord of the city is called "Escalo," a name that recalls the surname "Della Scala," the famous Lords of Verona and, in fact, at the time the lord of the city was Bartolomeo I Della Scala.
